Case Human Trafficking is a worldwide issue where men, women, and children are exploited, bought and sold. We have more slaves in existence today than at any time in history. It is a $32 billion a year industry, making it the fastest growing criminal activity. Human Trafficking is ranked in the top three illegal trades with the trafficking of drugs and weapons. There are said to be 12.3 million people living in slavery worldwide with only 0.4% of trafficking victims worldwide identified.*U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report, 2010*International Justice Mission, 2010

Link Human Trafficking is a rampant industry right in the United States of America that is exploiting our nations children. An estimated 325,000 children are exploited in the commercial sex industry in our country, after being tortured and abused these children are often arrested and charged with crimes such as soliciting and placed in detention centers without the proper services they need to heal both physically and mentally. There are an estimated 14,500 to 17,000 people trafficked into the United States annually and into an unthinkable life often working countless hours, sleeping behind padlocked doors and barred windows.*U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report, 2010*National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2007

Load Where do the girls come from?Nepal is a small landlocked country lying between India and Tibet. In the hills and valleys of Nepal, in small isolated villages, live 26 million of the poorest people in the world. Most of the rural people speak only local tribal languages, not even Nepali, the lingua franca of their country. Educational and medical facilities are almost nonexistent, and more than a third of the children are severely under nourished. Half of the population is under 23 years of age. The place of females in Nepalese society In Nepal, women are second class citizens, both legally and socially. Young girls are a financial liability to families who must often pay a dowry to marry their daughters. The female population between the ages of eight and 18 is approximately 4,000,000 most of them are at risk of being trafficked. The basic literacy rate among rural women is about 30 percent. An estimated 12,000 Nepalese girls were trafficked into brothels in India last year and the number is increasing rapidly. Why do parents allow their girls to be taken? Poor families are deceived by the fraudulent promise of an arranged marriage, or by promises of gainful employment for their daughters in Kathmandu or India. Sometimes a trafficker will meet a girl at the marketplace and treat her to a soft drink, which turns out to be laced with narcotics. The girl wakes up four hours later under control of the trafficker, on her way to an Indian brothel. In addition, many girls are taken from their villages under false pretenses by an unscrupulous relative or a corrupt formerly trusted friend of the parents. What happens once the girls are taken from their homes? Traffickers take small groups of girls across the open border with India and sell them to brothel owners in major Indian cities. Once sold, the girls are tortured, beaten, and raped into submission. They are often forced to submit to sex more than 20 times per day. Their physical condition is monitored monthly, and they must submit to abortion. Once diagnosed as HIV-positive and too sick to work, they are abandoned in the street or they arrive, ill and destitute, at the Nepalese border. Many are pregnant. Most returned girls are suffering from AIDS, hepatitis, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases. The damage, both physical and psychological, is incalculable. The human suffering is unspeakable. What does Maiti Nepal do? Working with Nepalese police, Maiti Nepal assists in intercepting young women at border crossings before they are taken into India, by providing surveillance at the border points. Maiti staff members rescue trafficked girls and women in Indian brothels, repatriate them to Nepal, and rehabilitate them. Maiti provides food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and a hospice. For the young women whose physical health can be restored, Maiti provides vocational education and micro loans to help them start small businesses. In addition Maiti provides legal and psychological counseling, public awareness campaigns, and it lobbies for tougher trafficking laws in Nepal. The Emergency After eight years of an armed Maoist revolt, Nepal is struggling to institute a democratic republic, but the fledgling government is not yet fully functional. The meager funds for services to rural areas have been diverted to military and other expenses. The resultant disorder and confusion in the country has allowed traffickers free rein, and the number of young women taken has increased significantly. The burden on Maiti Nepal has also increased dramatically with the rising number of young women rescued or returning from India. They arrive at the rescue center as social outcasts, many of them pregnant, with severe medical problems, no physical possessions other than the ragged and soiled clothing they are wearing, and no other place to take shelter. Formed in 2008, Sargent Avenue blends a variety of musical influences to create rhythmic, emotive rock music and high-energy live shows. With a sound similar to 30 Seconds To Mars, Red, Alter Bridge, and Saosin, Sargent Avenue has played at conferences, venues, and festivals across the world, most notably for 15,000 people at MTV EXIT's anti-trafficking awareness festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Their first album, "To Whom It May Concern," was released in 2010. Since the album's release they have added veteran guitarists Noah Henson (Pillar) and Gregg Hionis (Day Of Fire), and have continued to craft their art. Their anticipated second album, titled "Euphoria," is expected to release in September 2011.

Brigitte Cazalis-Collins and Joeph H

Brigitte Cazalis-Collins has directed and implemented major outreach projects assisting refugees and women, both in the U.S. and in Nepal. In the U.S. she was a founding member of the Tibetan Resettlement Project, which provided sponsors, housing, employment, and counseling to Tibetan families who immigrated to the U.S. under the Immigration Act of 1992. Since 2001 she has devoted her efforts to representing Maiti Nepal in the U.S., focusing on fundraising and increasing awareness of the problem of sex trafficking.

Todd TJ Duckett

Drew Stanton played football for Michigan State University and left as one of the most prolific passers in school history. Drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 2007 NFL Draft, Drew led the Lions to a victory over the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in week 14 of the 2010 NFL season. Stanton has become a leader at home as well as on the field. The High 5ive Foundation, a 501c3 organization that Drew established in 2008, works to support programs at the Special Olympics and Childrens Miracle Network. Drew has been heavily involved with both organizations since his time at Michigan State University.

Todd Duckett has been blessed with 30 years of life experiences. Born in Kalamazoo Michigan, he attended Michigan State University on a football scholarship to study communications. After a successful collegiate career, he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Todd played seven years in the NFL before entering the world of business. Along with his brother Tico, Todd formed Duckett Brothers Distributing, a janitorial supplies company. Todd realizes the importance of helping others and started focusing the community by creating Lunch with a Purpose and New World Flood, which provide opportunities for community members to serve each other and better their environment. One of his favorite quotes is, "Finding who you are changes your world and theirs."

Link One World.One Future. Is offering high school students the opportunity to participate in an exciting activity. Each high school that signs up will be challenged to raise $100. All money raised will be put toward a shelter that One World.One Future. is working to fund in partnership with the Friends of Maiti Nepal, an organization that works with the CNN hero of the year, Anuradha Koirala (www.friendsofmaitinepal.org). The $100 amount was chosen because it equals the cost to rescue and rehabilitate one child who has suffered through the reality of being trafficked. The film seeks to spotlight the issue of human trafficking to show the dedication of Michigans youth to end this human injustice, and to serve as inspiration for young people to engage in addressing the societal issues they care about. We ask that the kids get footage from the fundraiser that they put together, as well as some footage of the students answering the following questions:1. What is their reaction to the issue of human trafficking and other issues of social injustice?2. What do they feel they can do as young people to make a difference? 3. How much responsibility and power do they feel they hold to make a difference?4. Do they feel that they have the ability to pave a more proactive and perhaps positive path that other students can follow after they are gone? If so, how and who will benefit from it? Photography ProjectWe would also like one student from each school to write on their hand the number of lives that their county/school saved through their chosen fundraiser (e.g., $100=1life, $200=2lives). The photos of students hands throughout our state will be compiled into a piece of art that will symbolize the youth of Michigan coming together to help others. Next YearPlease let us know if this project is something that the students think they would like to participate in next year. The President of One World One Future and current Miss Michigan, Katie, will be traveling internationally for approximately one year beginning September of 2011. She is offering to Skype in presentations for interested student groups from overseas. Please keep this fun opportunity in mind.

Page 6 One World One Future is working to provide the organization Maiti Nepal (www.maitinepal.org) with the funding necessary for a transit shelter to be located on the border of India and Nepal. This shelter is estimated to rescue approximately 250 girls from being sold into a life of slavery each year. The cost of a single shelter is $25,000 meaning that we have the ability to save a life for $100! Not only does $100 save a life and provide a safe home, the transit homes are also engaged in counseling, facilitating medical check-ups to determine health status, motivating survivors to identify traffickers, and building networks and pressure groups. Transit homes are located at major Nepal India border towns through which many of the children and women are trafficked into India. These border towns are potential points where a little vigilance can have significant payoffs. Objectives of transit home:1. To work with police and concerned agencies to intercept potential victims, and apprehend traffickers.2. To provide a safe transit shelter home for short stays for intercepted and released women and children. 3. To ensure safe passage to their respective villages.4. To provide information on safe migration. Transit homes serve as a safe shelter to survivors rescued from India and also to those who have been intercepted at borders while in the process of being trafficked. As per standard operating procedures the girls stay in the transit home for some time and then move to Maiti Nepal`s other establishments for further assistance.

About One World One Future is an organization run by a group of ambitious women determined to help their brothers and sisters around the world that are unjustifiably facing a life of slavery. Their compassion and motivation for this cause is rooted in the empathetic realization of what a life spent voiceless and trapped in slavery would be like. We are all given a set of tools to work with, many of which we are given at birth by no choice of our own. Friendship is what brought the women of One World One Future together and gratitude for life that they have been given fuel their desire to do what they can to make a difference.

The President of One World One Future is also the current Miss Michigan. For more information on Katies travels throughout Africa, Central America, Nepal and beyond you can access her Blog here. You can also book Katie to speak or perform at your event through the Miss Michigan Scholarship Program. She presents to all different audiences from all walks of life on the issue of human trafficking and frequently performs her dance routine, an artistic expression of her journey throughout the world coming to understand the reality of the human injustice that is taking place. (This routine won the preliminary Talent award at Miss Michigan)
